Cuba 1962. The Missile Crisis
On 14 October 1962, an American aircraft spotted nuclear-tipped missiles being installed in Cuba — Soviet missiles less than 200 kilometres from the American coastline. What followed was thirteen days of arm-wrestling between the two superpowers, led by Kennedy and Khrushchev, triggering worldwide acute awareness of the nuclear threat.
Thirteen days of extreme tension, unbearable suspense and unprecedented dramatic intensity. Thirteen days to bring the Soviets back to reason, with a cascade of dramatic twists, contradictions and even confrontations within each camp worthy of a great thriller.
Never before had the world come so close to nuclear catastrophe — even more so than we believed at the time, and indeed still believe today.
Georges Ayache revisits this historic crisis, basing his gripping account on a thorough examination of the principal American sources.
