Intelligence Research Review - No. 2 - Intelligence in Wartime

In this second issue, the Intelligence Research Review immerses us in the heart of intelligence in wartime, with particular emphasis on the two world conflicts that transformed the twentieth century.

This review examines the observations and practices of the various actors engaged in these conflicts. Through a series of in-depth dossiers, expert analyses and reflections reveal the ways in which intelligence services collect strategic information, anticipate threats, influence decisions through the resources obtained, and constantly adapt their methods in the face of the uncertainties of war.

Thus, as an opening piece, one article explores the notion of perception and analyses that of France and its army as seen by Germany on the eve of the First World War, as well as the way in which French intelligence exploited the letters and notebooks of German soldiers. Regarding the Second World War, one researcher investigates the true sources of Rudolf Roessler's Lucie network in Switzerland, while another studies the role of Joséphine Baker in French counter-intelligence during the conflict. Finally, alongside these main themes, two authors examine the Cagoule, a French fascist and terrorist organisation highly active between 1936 and 1940: the first draws a portrait of the singular Dr Henry Martin, an intelligence "obsessive", and the second analyses this organisation's efforts to purchase arms, principally in Belgium (1936–1937), in preparation for a coup d'état in France. The Research Notebook section offers a more specific study on the role of submarine forces and their implications for intelligence.

La Revue de recherche sur le renseignement is a new journal created by the Security & Defence, Intelligence, Criminology, Cyber Threats, and Crises team at CNAM (the Conservatoire national des Arts et Métiers). It publishes reference articles across all fields of intelligence studies — not only in history or political science, but across all academic disciplines. It addresses every dimension of European and global intelligence. Edited by Professor Philippe Baumard, its editorial board includes numerous intelligence experts: Professor Alain Bauer, Françoise Chalaye, Pierre Cruciani, Lukas Grave, Adrian Hänni, Nigel Inkster, John C. Mallery, and others.
