Intelligence Research Review - No. 1 - Women in Intelligence

This very first issue of the Intelligence Research Review immerses us in the fascinating world of "women spies" and reveals how they have shaped the history of intelligence through thoroughly documented in-depth articles, striking portraits, and a wealth of further dossiers.

The various researchers and authors of this review offer an analysis both of the mechanisms of women's engagement, the historical factors behind this shift, and the stakes of an emerging feminine intelligence. Not omitting an exploration of the persistent clichés to which "women spies" have long been subject. Portraits of prominent figures — such as Etta Palm (French Revolution), Louise de Bettignies (First World War), Lydia Oswald and Jeanne Georgel (Second World War) — give flesh to these reflections and to this feminine espionage, as rich as it is complex.

Building on this dossier, further studies focus on occupied Belgium and France during the First and then the Second World Wars, analysing the roles and places of women within German secret police organisations during the Great War and women's involvement in intelligence networks during the second conflict.

Finally, in the Research Notebook, an author examines what becomes of state secrets in public archives, while in Yesterday's News, it is French intelligence in Lyon under the Occupation that is the subject of an in-depth study.

La Revue de recherche sur le renseignement is a new journal created by the Security & Defence, Intelligence, Criminology, Cyber Threats, and Crises team at CNAM (the Conservatoire national des Arts et Métiers). It publishes reference articles across all fields of intelligence studies — not only in history or political science, but across all academic disciplines. It addresses every dimension of European and global intelligence. Edited by Professor Philippe Baumard, its editorial board includes numerous intelligence experts: Professor Alain Bauer, Françoise Chalaye, Pierre Cruciani, Lukas Grave, Adrian Hänni, Nigel Inkster, John C. Mallery, and others.
