On 27 March 1943, Alfred Douroux — Freddy to his friends, to the judges and to the police — enlisted in the Wehrmacht with the Légion des volontaires français contre le bolchevisme, the LVF.

He pursued his career as a military collaborator in the Waffen SS, fighting in May 1945 among the ruins of Berlin, "a white silk scarf around his neck and a cigar clenched between his teeth", in his own words. The "veterans" imposed a sanitised narrative: by fighting the Red Army, Freddy and his comrades had been courageous soldiers.

It took Philippe Douroux, Freddy's son, six years of investigation to break a family and national silence: 10,000 French men were indeed the fervent accomplices of monstrous massacres perpetrated in Byelorussia between 1942 and 1944. Their testimonies, writings and images make it possible to establish a different truth.

In this important book, prefaced by historian Johann Chapoutot, Philippe Douroux reveals a little-known and striking chapter of military collaboration.
