During the 19th and 20th centuries, France established itself as a major colonial power (Maghreb, Africa, Asia, Oceania), driven by a policy of expansion deeply rooted in its political, economic and cultural history.

This work addresses the debates it has sparked: the effects of these policies in metropolitan France and in the colonised countries, the organisation, control and exploitation of these territories, overseas cultures, the interaction between colonisers and colonised, the rise of independence movements… These questions reveal the weight of a legacy that remains very much alive, in which taboos, memories, identity politics and social unrest continually bring this colonising France back to life.

To enrich these discussions and provide further perspectives, thematic sections examine the facts, their material, human and cultural effects throughout history, and the legacies transmitted to the present day. An extensive bibliography is attached to each chapter, making it easy to use as a reference work.
