November 1942: the Wehrmacht invaded the free zone, bringing about the establishment of German police and repression services south of the Loire. With the complicity of the Vichy regime, French collaborators of every stripe became the zealous auxiliaries of the occupier. In the Clermont region, Emile Coulaudon, future commander of the FFI in Auvergne, decided to form a special unit responsible for the elimination of "collaborators": the corps franc des Vampires gradually took shape and became operational.

Between 1943 and 1945, executions and spectacular acts of sabotage became the daily reality of these shadow fighters who, in order to achieve their objectives, regularly had to infiltrate enemy informants and move in the circles of the local underworld. Far from the glorious battles of Mont Mouchet or the Truyère, the Vampires thus wrote one of the most delicate and little-known pages of the Resistance.
