Kampfgruppe Peiper was the spearhead of the 6. Panzer-Armee in the Ardennes, tasked with clearing the way for the German armoured thrust toward the Meuse and Antwerp. Endowed with considerable firepower, it gathered the most motivated veterans of the Third Reich. Peiper's unit was to drive forward without regard for its flanks, seizing the bridges spanning the Meuse before the American army had time to react.

After a difficult start, the German armoured column broke through the GIs' defensive screen and pushed toward its objective. It had to cross the Ardennes, a zone easy to defend that the American command used to buy time. The bridges were blown one after another in front of Peiper's men. Short of fuel, he came to a halt, isolated on a promontory at La Gleize.

Drawing on combat reports from both sides, this book analyses events as they unfolded, minute by minute, and explains the reasons for Peiper's failure — who had, on paper, all the cards he needed to win.
