The appearance of armoured vehicles on the battlefield profoundly changed the behaviour of the infantry. For years, armies attempted to better coordinate the action of infantrymen and that of armoured units, but it was on the German side that this synergy was most actively developed.

Despite faltering beginnings at the start of the Second World War, the German infantrymen learned to coordinate with tank crews, eventually giving rise to the Panzergrenadier — mechanised infantry. Mounted on their Sd. Kfz. 251 and supported by its variants, these soldiers of a new kind would be employed intensively by the Germans from 1942 onwards, ultimately embodying the pinnacle of combined-arms warfare and the infantry-armour relationship.

This encyclopaedia presents the weaponry of this soldier during the Second World War. It also examines his training and combat tactics. The whole is enhanced by numerous colour profiles and silhouettes drawn by Angel Pinto.
