Australia, a dominion little known before the First World War, forged a strong national identity from 1915 onwards. It fought on the battlefields of Gallipoli, at the Dardanelles. It also intervened in the terrible fighting on the French front from 1916, at Fromelles in the Nord, then at Arras and on the Somme.

During the Second World War, the Australians distinguished themselves above all during the Desert War, from 1940 to late 1942. They also opposed the Japanese in the Pacific, notably in New Guinea.
