The 1st Infantry Division was formed in 1917 to fight in France and faced the great German offensives of 1918. During the Second World War, it made its first landing in North Africa in 1942. The invasion of Sicily and the Normandy landings followed, along with the Battle of the Bulge and the conquest of the Reich through to Czechoslovakia.

According to the legend of the time, the American army was composed of the 1st Division and six million replacement soldiers! Through several hundred historical photographs, we follow the combat history of this elite unit in 1942–1945. Entrusted with the most difficult missions, it accomplished them without faltering.

The authors:

Stéphane Lavit, born in 1974 and residing in Haute-Savoie, has been passionate about the history of the Second World War since his earliest years. A historical re-enactor and collector, he is the founder of the living history group Overlord.74.

Philippe Charbonnier, born in 1962, is a journalist, editor-in-chief of "Militaria Magazine" and a specialist in the US Army of the Second World War.
