On 15 May 1948, the Egyptian, Syrian, Iraqi and Transjordanian armies launched an assault on the newly proclaimed State of Israel, whose creation had been voted through by a UN resolution the day before. Outnumbered sixty to one, without allies, without a regular army and without an air force, the Israelis could count only on themselves — all the more so because the United States, England and most European countries were enforcing a strict arms embargo on any weapons destined for them. But they had not reckoned with the ingenuity and boldness of the Haganah and Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who had anticipated this Arab-Israeli war. From the end of 1947, in the utmost secrecy, the Israelis had begun to buy and clandestinely transport transport aircraft and fighter planes to lay the foundations of their future air force, while simultaneously recruiting aces of the Second World War of American, Canadian and South African nationality. Thus it was that on 29 May 1948, four Messerschmitts bearing the Star of David on their wings swooped down on Egyptian troops who were only a few kilometres from Tel Aviv. The course of the war was immediately altered… And this was only the beginning.
