In order to move beyond ideas endlessly recycled, the author — an undisputed specialist in military-religious orders — brings together in this work a wealth of precise data on the reality of the Templar experience. Neither collective biography nor dictionary, this book gathers and tallies all information recorded about Templars in the trials and other proceedings that unfolded from the round-up of 13 October 1307 to the dissolution of the Order in 1312. Origins, careers, locations… whether knights, chaplains, or sergeants, an entire people emerges through the 2,336 Templars identified, the earliest active since 1248, with 1,135 physically present in one or more of the proceedings. Both a catalogue and a documentary resource, this work sheds light on a pivotal period in the history of the Order, which at that time was sending large numbers of recruits to Cyprus in the hope of regaining a foothold in the Holy Land.
