In June 1944, between Dunkirk and Hendaye, the Atlantic Wall was defended by approximately three hundred artillery batteries, totalling more than a thousand guns, some of very large calibre. The majority of these artillery pieces were of French origin; they were positioned along the shoreline, on open platforms, in concrete shelters, or mounted in turrets as on a warship. Combining archival photographs with present-day images, the book surveys the main installations built by the German army along the French coastline from De Panne to Hendaye, designed to prevent a surface fleet from approaching the shore. Despite a few spectacular installations — such as the long-range batteries firing on the English coast from the Pas-de-Calais — the Atlantic Wall's long-range striking power proved singularly ineffective on 6 June 1944, in the Bay of the Seine, against the guns of the Allied naval fleet.
