M1951 Field Parka Fishtail olive - Pike Brothers

The Parka Field 1951 is the updated version of the M-1948 winter jacket. When the United States entered the war against North Korea, it quickly became apparent that clothing was needed to withstand the harsh Korean winters.

Drawing inspiration from garments worn by the Inuit, the US Army developed a parka (a word of Inuit origin) with a removable inner lining large enough to be worn over the uniform. This parka is recognisable by the back hem that tapers like a fishtail. The liner is quilted and removable.

At the end of the war, soldiers kept their parkas. Due to its functionality, it remained in service until the 1980s with a few style modifications.

In the civilian world, it quickly became very popular. In the 1970s and 1980s, the British Mods movement took it up. The garment became a widely worn fashion accessory until the end of the 1980s.

Pike Brothers reissued the Parka Field 1951 to the same specifications as in the early 1950s. From the tightly woven outer poplin fabric to the Talon zipper and the removable quilted nylon inner lining.
