The Deck Hook Jacket appeared in the US Navy in 1943/44 as a replacement for the Deck Zip Jacket. The Navy then decided to experiment with a hook fastening system. Its predecessor featured only a zipper, which had a tendency to freeze in the sometimes polar cold on ship decks. Furthermore, opening or closing the zip while wearing gloves was extremely difficult. The hook system does not freeze and can be operated with gloves.

The original jacket is highly sought after by collectors as an iconic Navy piece and is extremely rare. It was produced for only one year.
