The American Essex-class aircraft carriers served from 1943 to 1991, from the second part of the Pacific War to the end of the Cold War. Twenty-four vessels were actually commissioned. No two ships are exactly alike, owing to different shipyards, evolving detection equipment, varying degrees of modernization, repairs after damage, reinforced anti-aircraft armament and, after World War II, a succession of upgrades to adapt them for jet aircraft with a redesigned island and, for fifteen vessels, an angled flight deck. This Volume 2 covers the continuation and conclusion of the individual histories, beginning with the Boxer through to the Philippine Sea, with numerous appendices on armament, operations, designations, embarked aircraft, etc.

This Volume II comprises 432 pages, illustrated with 480 photographs.
