Navires & Histoire du Monde Collection N°43

The American Essex-class aircraft carriers served from 1943 to 1991, from the second half of the Pacific War to the end of the Cold War. Twenty-four vessels were actually commissioned. No two ships are exactly alike, owing to different shipyards, evolving detection equipment, varying degrees of modernisation, repairs following battle damage, reinforced anti-aircraft armament, and — after the Second World War — a succession of upgrades to adapt them to jet aircraft, including a redesigned island and, for fifteen vessels, an angled flight deck. Volume I covers the origins, construction and technical description of the vessels, together with the histories of the first nine ships, from the Essex to the Bennington. Volume II will cover the continuation and conclusion of the individual histories, from the Boxer through to the Philippine Sea, with numerous appendices. This Volume I runs to 376 pages, with numerous diagrams and maps, illustrated with over 550 photographs.
