Memories of La vache et le prisonnier with Fernandel are often the only images that come to mind when speaking of the French soldiers taken prisoner in 1940. Yet far from the cinema screen, 1.85 million of them were deprived of their liberty, imprisoned far from home and used as cheap labour.

Victims of a distorted image and a French history that unfolded without them, the captive soldiers — genuine victims themselves — are, for several reasons, the great forgotten figures of the historiography of the Second World War.

Drawing on testimonies from prisoners and their descendants, a rich collection of objects made in stalags, works of art, documents and original photographs, this volume invites us to better understand the workings of a little-known history that nevertheless left a lasting mark on a great many French families.
