1940: secondary school pupils, university students and apprentices, wounded by the humiliation of the defeat, refused to settle into the compromise of collaboration and submission to Nazi Germany. Slowly, in lycées, collèges and universities, resistance networks took shape, led by activists as young as fourteen and no older than eighteen.

This movement then spread rapidly across the entire territory, and the actions carried out by these young people were remarkable for their maturity and ingenuity.

Yet these early resisters paid a heavy price for their courage: among so many others, the lycée students of Buffon in Paris were shot, as were those of Nice, and the hostages of the Châteaubriant camp were atrociously executed.

Raphaël Delpard, with the historical rigour we have come to expect of him, has rescued from unjust oblivion this movement of exemplary patriotism and brought it to our attention.
