According to Father Daniel, it was under the reign of Henri II that the dragoon corps found its origins, with the mounted arquebusiers established in 1554.

These were infantrymen organised in small bands, grouped into companies transported on horseback and making use of their firearms on foot. The designation of these men by the nickname "dragons" does not appear until the reign of Henri III. It referred equally to mounted arquebusiers, carabins or mounted musketeers. The etymological origin of the name is undoubtedly linked to the genesis of the corps. It is disputed by historians who propose a German origin (tragen), or an Italian one with the mounted arquebusiers of Marie de Médicis, bearing dragons on their standards, or alternatively a Latin origin with the Roman ensigns (draconarii). Whatever the case, this work allows you to discover the sumptuous and brilliant uniforms of these cavalrymen whom the reign of Louis XIV immortalised during the repression carried out against the Camisards and the famous dragonnades, from the wars of the Grand Siècle to the first battles fought by the generals of Louis XV.
