Originally designed to provide the USAF with a lightweight fighter, the Northrop F-5 had only a marginal career in the United States, which used it for pilot air combat training. It was in the export market that it achieved real success, with more than twenty countries choosing this small, efficient and above all affordable twin-jet. A success that continued with its improved version, the Tiger II, so that in total, across all variants, more than 2,600 examples of the F-5 came off the production lines, some of them still flying today, with various upgrade programmes allowing for operational use beyond 2020…
