February 1945: General de Lattre de Tassigny and his First French Army stand before the Rhine. He is the first since Turenne and Napoleon to be in a position to cross it by force. The Americans are not in favour. No matter — supported and encouraged by General de Gaulle, he crosses the Rhine in strength on 31 March 1945 at Gemmersheim. He is about to write one of France's finest pages of glory, today unknown to many French people, conquer France's occupation zone in Germany, and secure for France a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. The Rhine and Danube epic, having passed through Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Ulm, Constance and Austria, culminates in apotheosis in Berlin on 9 May 1945 at 00:20, when General de Lattre signs, on behalf of France, the act of surrender of Nazi Germany.
