Following "Fighting for Elbeuf", Didier Lodieu returns to the same subject, but this time from the Allied side: resisters and civilians.

This second work reveals the difficulties encountered by the liberators in overcoming the soldiers of the 2. SS-Panzerdivision "Das Reich".

Nearly 7,000 G.I.s were ready to move in to liberate Saint-Pierre-lès-Elbeuf, Caudebec-lès-Elbeuf and then Elbeuf, the final objective. American generals Cota and Brooks had organised a vast encirclement plan targeting the Waffen-SS tasked with holding the town. But the affair proved far from straightforward, as Panthers and Pz. IVs arrived to support the infantry, and these tank types proved superior to the Shermans. As these American units approached, the resisters from the three communes set aside their political differences to form a united front against the enemy. They organised themselves as best they could despite a glaring lack of weapons, determined to capture as many German soldiers as possible to seize their arms, then establish contact with the G.I.s and supply them with intelligence.
