Dieter Dengler joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and was assigned in 1965 to the aircraft carrier USS Ranger, from which he flew missions over North Vietnam. In February 1966, his aircraft was shot down and he was taken prisoner by Communist Pathet Lao militiamen, who subjected him to torture and humiliation. An account later adapted for the screen by Werner Herzog.

Trained as a Navy fighter pilot, young Lieutenant Dieter Dengler was assigned in 1965 to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ranger, cruising in North Vietnamese waters. Shot down on his first secret mission over Laos in February 1966, he survived the crash of his aircraft but was captured by Communist Pathet Lao militiamen. Dieter Dengler endured numerous acts of torture and humiliation before being taken to a prisoner-of-war camp, where he found five other fellow captives, including two American airmen. On discovering that one of those airmen had already been a prisoner for two years with no prospect of imminent release, Dieter Dengler understood that he had to escape or die. After five months of torture, deprivation and psychological breakdown, Dieter Dengler succeeded in escaping with his companions. Hunted by militiamen and abandoned to the fury of the jungle for more than three weeks, not all of them would survive.
