It starts from a observation: the volume of data available on the Second World War has never been greater, yet it has become difficult to make sense of it and, above all, to communicate it to a broad audience. It was therefore necessary to devise — drawing on rigorous historical method and the finest international sources — a format capable both of handling the mass of available data and of making it intelligible to the widest possible readership. That format is the infographic, and the result is breathtaking: whether renewing our knowledge, visualising the broad outlines of the conflict, readily understanding complex phenomena, or simply connecting aspects of the war that had hitherto remained fragmented.
In four parts — Mobilisations, Production and Resources; Arms and Armies; Battles and Campaigns; Balance Sheet and Fractures — bringing together some sixty major themes — the oil equation, what is an infantry division?, Operation Barbarossa, Allied logistics in Europe, the American reconquest of the Pacific, the Nazi concentration camp system, the epic of Free France, German losses, the desert war… — it is the entire Second World War that is here rethought through a format that is particularly accessible, profoundly original, and no less aesthetic.
Editor-in-chief of Guerres et histoire, Jean Lopez is the author of several authoritative works on the Eastern Front, including, with Lasha Otkhmezuri, a biography of Zhukov that has received universal acclaim. He has also co-edited, with Olivier Wieviorka, Les Mythes de la Seconde Guerre mondiale (2 volumes) and published Les cents derniers jours d'Hitler.
A recognised specialist in military history, Vincent Bernard has already published a widely noted biography of General Lee and his great adversary, General Grant.
Agrégé in history, Nicolas Aubin is a specialist in the Second World War and contributes to numerous military history journals. He is the author of Routes de la liberté. La logistique américaine en France et en Allemagne, 1944-1945.
Trained as a graphic designer, Nicolas Guillerat moved, after a stint in advertising, into data visualisation. He also teaches data design.
