Tobruk, Greece, Egypt, Libya, the Mediterranean, the Western Desert… It is in these wartime skies that French Fighter Squadron No. 1 (EFC1) made its mark. From 18 June 1940, this handful of pilots chose to follow de Gaulle and to continue the fight against Nazi Germany in the air.

At the most critical hours of the Second World War, these airmen of Free France fought in their Hurricane fighters, one against twenty, facing the Luftwaffe and the Regia Aeronautica in the desert war.

Musketeers bearing the Cross of Lorraine, condemned to death by Vichy for desertion, they were the only Frenchmen inside the besieged citadel of Tobruk. There, alongside Squadron 73 of the Royal Air Force, they took part in this strategic battle. Through their commitment and sacrifice, they helped to deal a decisive check to Rommel's Afrika Korps offensive towards the Suez Canal.

Here, day by day, is its epic, tragic and humour-filled adventure, retraced for the first time; or how a small unit, through sheer determination, helped to change the course of history.

This is the story of the first military unit to be named Compagnon de la Libération.
