Developed by SNCASO in response to a programme defined by the Armée de l'Air general staff in 1951, the Vautour is a twin-engine monoplane with swept wings and tail surfaces. Three versions were conceived from the outset: a single-seat ground-attack variant (A), a two-seat bomber (B) and a two-seat all-weather fighter (N). After a first maiden flight in October 1952, the first Vautour was officially delivered in May 1956; however, the initial order for 300 examples was ultimately reduced to 140 for budgetary reasons at the end of 1958. Israel purchased around thirty examples, which were committed during the Six-Day War, with some remaining in service until 1972. On the French side, certain aircraft were used in French Polynesia during nuclear tests, where they served to collect radioactive particles present in the atmosphere.
