In the early 1940s, new uniform concepts were developed within the American armed forces. In 1944, the USMC (U.S. Marine Corps) began using the P-44 trousers, also known as "Monkey Pants". These are the most iconic and representative trousers of the USMC. They differ significantly from the earlier P-41 model with large cargo pockets at the rear and on the sides. The side pockets were sized to hold K-ration boxes. The rear pocket was intended to accommodate a camouflage poncho. Multiple pockets facilitate storage of all the soldier's gear.
