CWU – The beginning of modern functional clothing.

The abbreviation stands for Cold Weather Uniform. It refers to a layering system developed in the early 1960s by the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force to better protect their pilots. Keeping personnel warm and combat-ready has always been a challenge, particularly during high-altitude flights and on isolated air bases. During the Second World War, natural fibres were primarily used to keep pilots warm. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, researchers developed new forms of insulation using technical fibres. Vests thus became thinner and warmer.

The new CWU vests are part of this system. They are made from thick, quilted polyamide, which is lightweight, abrasion-resistant and well-insulating. These vests are worn under the flight jacket and thus serve as a layering system.

Pike Brothers made our vests from the same quilted polyamide fabric used at the time.
