In 1958, American Optical developed, at the request of the US Air Force, the Flight Goggle 58 (HGU-4/P), known today as the Original Pilot. It replaced the Aviator G2, which had equipped American pilots during the Second World War.

They meet a specification established by the US Air Force: an extremely sturdy steel frame with comfortable straight temples, ideal for helmet wearers and preventing ear injuries in the event of a crash, a 20 mm nose bridge to accommodate the wearing of a gas mask, and finally mineral lenses using True Color Grey technology that does not alter natural colours, thereby facilitating the acquisition of targets or objects.

On 20 July 1969, they became the first sunglasses on the Moon — this iconic model was indeed worn by the Apollo 11 crew and has ever since been the favourite sunglasses of astronauts.

This warranty applies only to American Optical sunglasses purchased from authorised resellers and is valid for the original purchaser only. Proof of purchase (receipt) must be provided for any warranty claim.
