The abbreviation CWU stands for Cold Weather Uniform. It designates garments developed by the United States Air Force to provide warm clothing for pilots and aircrew at high altitude.

These are jackets that were worn under the flight suit or flight jacket. During the Second World War, these garments were woven from natural fibres (wool, etc.). In the late 1940s and early 1950s, researchers developed new forms of insulation using technical fibres. With these improvements, the jackets became thinner and warmer. 

Pike Brothers CWU jackets use these synthetic fibres. They are made from a thick, lightweight, abrasion-resistant quilted polyamide that provides excellent insulation. They are manufactured using the same padded polyamide fabric as was used at the time. Three exterior pockets and an original specification label identify it as a genuinely military-issue item.


The 1965 CWU jacket comes in two colours. The original in army green and a more classic version in black.
