In the fields, in the factories, in the hospitals, women contributed to the war effort from 1914 onwards: they worked, sometimes as volunteers, maintained the household routine and provided moral support to soldiers, watching their children enrolled as "future poilus". In the territories of the North, some bore the full brunt of the occupation — requisitions, forced labour and deportations. Others chose to resist blind patriotism by opposing militarism and the war, or by denouncing their working conditions. The Great War thus overturned the social order, yet after the armistice, French women, having not obtained the right to vote, remained excluded from citizenship. This work brings together the leading historians on the subject alongside an exceptionally rich body of iconography, with more than 200 documents (photographs, posters, leaflets, newspapers, archival documents, letters).
