7th SS DIVISION “PRINZ EUGEN”
7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division
"This book will enable the reader to learn about the little-known fate of a Waffen-SS mountain division made up largely of ethnic Germans (Volksdeutsche) settled in Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, or Hungary, and mobilized as part of the settlement policy of “Greater Germany.”
This division was initially commanded by a Transylvanian who had served in the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Army (Gruppenführer Artur
Phleps), then by an experienced senior officer (Brigadeführer Otto Kumm): together they would make it a highly specialized field division.
Although “Prinz Eugen” fought mainly against the partisans, with certain atrocities, it also had to face regular Soviet and Bulgarian troops, demonstrating its effectiveness in “conventional” combat as well: it would not lay down its arms until May 12, 1945, four days after the official end of hostilities.
Thanks to numerous photographs, most of them previously unpublished, the reader will gain a clearer understanding of this atypical Waffen-SS unit, made up of “ethnic Germans” of all nationalities, operating in a complex geographical environment."
