French Air Force helicopters first appeared in 1950 to meet operational needs in Indochina and Algeria at war, where their crews and mechanics wrote the first pages of their glory. Redeployed to metropolitan France in the early 1960s, they were also stationed overseas and deployed on external operations in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Having supported ground forces in the Far East and North Africa, their crews were subsequently fully committed to supporting Air Force units, also responding to requests from civilian authorities in metropolitan France and overseas territories. From the mid-1960s, the aircraft were grouped into wings, squadrons and flights, and a wide range of transport, support, air policing, fire support and assistance missions was carried out on a daily basis. Fourteen different aircraft, from the Hiller 360 to the Caracal, from the Sikorsky H-19 to the Fennec, have already worn the roundels of the French Air Force under every sky in the world, operated by men and women whose motto "combattre et sauver" — fight and save — is more relevant than ever.
