On 20 November 1945, one of the most important trials in history opened in Nuremberg, during which 24 senior officials of the Third Reich were judged, including Hermann Göring, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Albert Speer and Rudolf Hess.

American photographer Charles W. Alexander spent a year capturing exceptional images that show, with rare clarity and detail, the individuals involved in the trial — notably the accused, their prosecutors, the judges, the witnesses and the defence counsel — as well as the venues: the courthouse, the cells and the courtroom. These photographs thus allow viewers to see and grasp what the countless books on the Nuremberg trial have described only in words.

At the close of the hearings devoted to the accused, an album of 115 photographs was presented to French judge Henri Donnedieu de Vabres. This historical album, unique in Europe, is today held at the Maison d'Izieu. Drawing on a selection of 70 photographs, some of them previously unpublished, the authors provide a unique and deeply moving visual record of the most decisive trial of the twentieth century.
