Common to both civilian and military worlds, intervention is emerging as an operational domain in its own right, both on home soil and in external operations. Cutting across various geographical and professional environments and subject to different legal frameworks, it paradoxically remains poorly identified and little studied. Defining intervention as a discipline — its philosophy, its recent history, its legal framework, its evolution, its similarities with other operational domains — has now become essential. By extension, it is important to consider the intervention units, which are numerous and varied, the particular constraints and operating principles that govern them, without, however, revealing their technical and tactical methods of action.

Philippe Cholous, who has commanded professional and specialised intervention units, is what is commonly called a reflective practitioner — that is, an author who studies through proven professional experience and a determination to approach things simply in order to put them in perspective. His work aims less to exhaustively define the state of the art than to open a field of reflection for readers interested in the domain of intervention.
