What is a "historical date"? In what sense can a moment be described as "historic" in our age, where the term is all too often overused?

The question becomes even more complex in the case of Antiquity, where an event that seemed of great importance at the time may appear secondary to us today. Conversely, what was then regarded as a mere episode may now be seen as a fundamental element in the evolution of the city-states of the classical period and the Hellenistic kingdoms.

These "fifty dates" are major milestones intended to illuminate ancient Greek history through events or figures that have left their mark on Hellenic memory — and also, though not necessarily the same ones, on our contemporary imagination of the Greek heritage.
