Willed by Marshal Pétain, the Statute on Jews was promulgated on 3 October 1940. Alongside this French legislation, the Nazi occupier put in place its own ordinances. Census-taking and Aryanisation were the prelude to the Final Solution. From 1942 onwards, arrests and round-ups followed one another in rapid succession, sending nearly a thousand Jews resident in Normandy to internment camps. Of these, nearly eight hundred were transported to concentration camps and, above all, extermination camps — principally Auschwitz-Birkenau. Only sixty returned alive.
