Who still remembers the light column launched in the conquest of Antananarivo (Madagascar)? The creation of the first Moroccan tabors? The French military mission to the Hejaz (Saudi Arabia)? The Cilicia campaign (Ottoman Empire)?

Who still knows the name of General Édouard Brémond (1868–1948)?

And yet! When his retirement entitlements were calculated, General Brémond's total service, including bonuses for wartime campaigns, came to 94 years in the field. That figure alone speaks to the richness of his career. When he returned to France for good at the end of 1920, he had spent very little time on home soil — only from August 1914 to August 1916 and from March to December 1918 on the Western Front of the Great War.

The man nicknamed "The Anti-Lawrence of Arabia" acquired an intimate knowledge of the Muslim world and of irregular warfare. This biography is therefore also a work of French military and colonial history.
