After a rapid advance, the troops of Archduke Charles drove back on the upper Danube a French army under the command of Marshal Berthier. However, the valour of the soldiers, the feats of the marshals and the arrival of the Emperor reversed a compromised situation. Falling back to the left bank of the Danube, the Austrians were pursued to the other bank by the French, who seized Vienna on 12 April. Napoleon now wished to finish the matter and sought to bring on a decisive battle. The Battle of Essling pitted, on 21 and 22 May 1809, the French and Austrian armies against each other in ferocious fighting. The Austrians drove the French divisions back to the Danube, where they were connected to their other corps only by a frail bridge. The tenacity of the "Kaiserlicks" and the caprices of the Danube got the better of the "Furia Francese". Forced to face his first defeat, less than two months later Napoleon would take his revenge on the plain of Wagram. Format 200×240 mm — 84 pages — Rich iconography, 3D map, uniform plates, etc.
