The birthplace of AVIATION, France possessed at the outbreak of the Great War only a few dozen military aircraft, and the high command scarcely knew what to do with them. By the Armistice of 11 November 1918, the French military air arm had become one of the most powerful in the world, mustering 10,000 aircraft distributed across nearly 300 escadrilles. The French aeronautical industry had been capable of producing 50,000 aircraft in four years, many of which equipped numerous Allied nations, including Great Britain, Russia and above all the United States. This work, the first of its kind in the French language, presents a comprehensive panorama of the development of French military AVIATION from 1914 to 1918, through a historical narrative punctuated with anecdotes and illustrated with numerous previously unpublished period photographs and profile drawings of the most iconic aircraft, complemented by complete technical data sheets for the aeroplanes built and used by France during the Great War.
