LORETTO, NOTRE-DAME-DE-LORETTE SEEN FROM THE GERMAN SIDE
The battle of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette seen from the German side
The terrible battle of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette seen from the German side. For the Germans as for the French, the fighting there reached an intensity rarely seen elsewhere on the front. It can be compared to that of Les Éparges, in the heights of the Meuse. The recapture of the hill, lost as early as September 1914, was essential for the French.
They launched attack after attack throughout the winter of 1914–1915. The Germans counter-attacked systematically. Casualties were terrible on both sides across such a narrow battlefield.
A book published by the Reichsarchiv in 1918 and translated into French for the first time for Ysec Éditions.
