At the beginning of June 1944, the Third Reich still extended its domination over the greater part of Europe. The German strategy for the summer of 1944 was all-round defence. This was intended to allow a decisive outcome in the West before returning to the offensive in the East. By the end of the summer, a series of defeats unprecedented in their scale shattered the power of the German army. On all fronts, a single watchword: « Rückmarsch! », the retreat.

The Third Reich had already lost the war before that terrible summer of 1944. Yet the resilience of the Wehrmacht and the professionalism, as well as the talent, of many of its generals were never more clearly demonstrated than during the withdrawal manoeuvres that led them back to the borders of the Reich.
