In just over twenty years of existence, the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) had millions of daggers manufactured for all the organisations of its movement. As distinctive insignia of membership in an elite corps or a specific organisation, NSDAP daggers came in a great variety of forms, allowing the immediate identification of their owner. At the fall of the Third Reich in 1945, Allied soldiers — and American soldiers in particular — were avid collectors of war souvenirs. During the occupation of Germany they recovered hundreds of thousands of Third Reich artefacts. The most coveted items were undoubtedly the daggers and fighting knives. Very quickly demand far outstripped supply, and the first copies appeared.
