This second volume, devoted to the drama of May 1940, presents the great turning point of the battle. By the morning of 16 May 1940, the outcome of the battle was already sealed. The French High Command would try by every means to re-establish a front by throwing before the advancing German units formations hurriedly recalled from Holland or Belgium — and therefore already necessarily depleted — or from the Maginot Line.

The movements of these units were subjected to relentless aerial bombardment which, at best, slowed them down and more often broke them apart entirely. Worse still, when these exhausted units reached the battlefield, they had no time to organise before they were already in contact with the enemy, and instead of formed units, it was isolated battalions that were consumed without any benefit to the overall effort, in a blaze that advanced inexorably. From 16 to 21 May, the Germans pushed forward to the sea and encircled the Allied armies that had rashly advanced into Belgium. The few attempts made on either side of the "Corridor" to loosen the grip all foundered for lack of sufficient means committed, and they would have no influence on the unfolding drama. This new volume, accompanied by a thousand photographs, once again follows the course of the fighting step by step with remarkable precision. Current comparative photographs allow us to identify the localities where this drama played out.
