Among them, many Americans who came to fight for the liberation of Europe. This book traces the journeys of some fifty of these soldiers who served in the ground, air, or naval forces of the United States. Throughout the conflict, they held a wide variety of roles: assault troops, bomber pilots, quartermasters aboard destroyers… Several nurses and a telephone operator bear witness to the commitment of female personnel. The study of official archives and documents kept by the soldiers helps retrace their military careers, from conscription to homecoming, through enlistment, training, and combat… Personal photographs, letters, decorations, and the small keepsakes belonging to each soldier illustrate the texts. At a time when veterans of the Second World War are becoming ever fewer, it is vital to carefully preserve these moving testimonies of a painful past.
