Wounded: 64,985, of which 35,615 in combat or by attack and 29,370 by accident. This, in all its starkness, is the official toll — on the French side — of a war that for a long time refused to say its name and hid behind a most mundane expression: law enforcement operations… Yet, from 1 November 1954 to 19 March 1962 — the official date of the end of combat, though not of attacks — a full-scale war unfolded in Algeria.
