The 1946 Mountaineer Boots were designed after typical mountain boots from the 1940s. At that time, mountain boots were generally built with a Goodyear welt combined with a Norwegian stitch for greater durability and water resistance.

The Norwegian welt — also known as Norwegian stitch — connects the insole to the midsole, making the shoe more rigid. It also prevents water from penetrating the shoe too quickly. This technique was typically used for outdoor shoes and boots.
