FIGHTING AMONG DRONES AND ROBOTS

In Ukraine, drones and robots have imposed a new reality of combat. What is at stake in this war is a major break in military history, comparable to the advent of firearms, but infinitely faster. It will shape all future conflicts and spread across the world. Henceforth, war will be waged with systems capable of extending the combatant's action, supporting him, or even substituting for him. For several years, the author has been analysing the rise of these unmanned systems. His conclusion is clear: developing a robotic tactics doctrine is no longer an option, but a necessity. And this transformation cannot be understood solely through the prism of ethical and legal debates, however important they may be. For it strikes at the very heart of military action: manoeuvre, decision, and shock. Drawing on extensive open-source research, military experience and a multidisciplinary approach, Tactique robotique explores the foundations of military robotics and places tactics at the centre of the analysis. A graduate of the Master's in International Relations, International Security and Defence from the Université Jean Moulin (Lyon III) and of the 4th battalion of the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr, Dylan Rieutord has specialised in the study of battlefield robotisation. A former army captain and IHEDN auditor, his work focuses on technological innovation, strategy and the tactical employment of military robots.
