On 4 August 1914, just over a month after the assassination in Sarajevo of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne, Sir Edward Grey, British Foreign Secretary, predicted: "The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime."
